If you’re heading to the Miami area for the Memorial Day Weekend, you may want to hit the brakes on those plans. South Beach has issued an emergency which will put a damper on Memorial Day fun. At Key Biscayne near Miami, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park reminds visitors that on a regular weekend it reaches capacity.
If you are hoping to miss the crowds and mayhem, check out these beaches. Villano Beach Passe A Grill Beach Sebastian Inlet State Park Calusa Beach, Florida Keys Lover’s Key State Park Navarre Beach Gasparilla Island Longboat Key Grayton Beach Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Amelia Island Lighthouse is Florida's oldest lighthouse. Originally built to guide vessels entering the St. Mary’s River and the Atlantic Ocean, the former Cumberland Lighthouse was moved due to changes in the channel that made it obsolete. It was dismantled brick by brick and transported by ship to Amelia Island. After being reconstructed, the lighthouse was lit in 1839 as Amelia Island Lighthouse.
The City of Fernandina owns and preserves the lighthouse. However, the Coast Guard along with the Coast Guard Auxiliary are responsible for the functioning of the beacon at the Amelia Island Lighthouse. Blood, Sweat & TearsLighthouses adorn postcards and remind us of peaceful days gone by.
But my painting of Biloxi lighthouse is far from peaceful. It portrays the painful past of the lighthouse located on a busy highway not a peaceful shore. The lighthouse has survived over 20 hurricanes, the Civil War and Civil Rights protests since it was built in 1848. It thrives on a busy 4 lane highway oblivious to the hustle and bustle around it. Biloxi beach was blackened by the BP oil spill that began in April 2010. People and wildlife still suffer from its repercussions today. Select the link or photo to read my latest newsletter.

Trinity House used the facility to repair and dock lightships, and to store buoys from the River Thames. Bowcreek Lighthouse was also once a Training Station for prospective light keepers.

Fanad Lighthouse was built after the shipwreck of the Royal Navy Frigate, Saldanha, where 250 people died. The only survivor was the Captain’s parrot. There’s nothing as enduring as a mother’s love. Perhaps that is why Mother’s Day is the third most popular holiday in the world. Americans spent 24.9 billion dollars on Mother’s Day in 2019.
Mothers are often lauded for their heroics and sacrificial love. Often this love goes unrequited beyond Mother’s Day. During the Pandemic 25% of women say they are worse off compared to 18% of men. It impacted women in jobs lost and those who left jobs because of caretaking responsibilities. It is being called the shecession. This has compounded the inequities women already face. Women lag behind men in leadership positions and income. Perhaps the honor bestowed on women on Mother’s Day will one day translate into 365 days of equal treatment. abcgo.com |
